If you have moderate perf. requirements, the Realtek offerings are both 
cheap and functional.  They lack many of the advanced features (LSO, 
virtualization, multiple ring support, etc.) that other offerings have, 
but they also are a lot cheaper.

In my experience, they Just Work.  (Note that I do *NOT* make the same 
claim about the Realtek 100M offerings... their 1G parts are robust, but 
the 100M ones were notoriously buggy requiring some rather evil 
(performance killing) software workarounds.

On the high end, the only other serious player in the 1G space I could 
recommend would be Broadcom.  Their NICs are harder to find though.
