There are cases where plumbing could be automated, but it is not always a
matter of "auto-detection". In particular:

        * Some IP interfaces (IPMP, VNI, loopback) have no direct mapping
(or mapping *at all*) with datalink objects. While the system
can infer some configuration from the network topology, the
administrator needs to be involved in these decisions.

        * It is not always appropriate or correct to plumb a datalink.
For instance, perhaps IPv4/IPv6 is not relevant to the task at
          hand (e.g., stealth L2 firewall / IDS / monitoring ...), or
perhaps virtualization has caused the datalink to be plumbed
elsewhere (e.g., an exclusive-type zone has plumbed the
          datalink).

While it can be confusing for those not used to the Solaris model, the
model is powerful, expressive, and leveraged to implement features that
are differentiators for Solaris such as IPMP and exclusive-ip-type zones.
