The passkey length shouldn't be a problem. AFAIK, it always gets turned into a hex key of length 64. Check the encryption key listed in iwconfig. Wit a signal strength of 44, it wouldn't take much interference to knock you off-line. It could come from a portable phone (not cell), a baby monitor, a microwave, or any number of sources. Google "wifi 2.4 interference" to see some ideas on what can interfere and how to avoid it. You might also try using a different channel from the 1,6,11 set.
