Seems this is quite a common problem. I don't know if it helps at all, but there are a couple of user submitted patches in the Ubuntu bug system aimed at sorting it out.
The one at the bottom of this thread allows a user configure the reconnection timeout: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/64173 Here's another related bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/37821 Also, after using network manager to get your connection up, issuing a kill -STOP to the NetworkManager process seems to stop the reconnections.
