Yes, this is probably somehow related to CIFS mounts.

I was also experiencing strange behaviors of Midnight Commander some
time ago on Samba shares (like computing the wrong number of files),
whereas Nautilus, for instance, worked just fine.

I didn't have the time and opportunity to check whether it is fixed now,
but this was sometime in ~2.6.35 kernel epoch... So you are not alone!
