[newbie] Please, color xterm

I really would like to know how to get a real colour xterm with kde. I need
to use a colour xterm when telnetting a very powerful computer so I can
manipulate my molecular mechanics calculations. The terminal emulation does
not work properly, I get no colour. The exact error messages, when I try to
use spartan, are:
(at initial login) Type xterm-color unknown
(I type spartan) Warning: Unmatched quotation marks in string "", any
remaining fonts in list unparsed
