I did both. The upgrade went smooth and I had few problems. After
restarting my network settings had to be redone but that's not much of a
problem. Anyway since I did not have any custom settings in 5.3 I
decided to do a clean install and load EVERYTHING just to see what's in
the package.

The install procedure is a little different but not so much as to be
confusing. I could not get the install to recognize my 3Com EtherLink
III 3C589D network card. Had the same happen with 5.3. This isn't a
problem because when I setup my network settings the card works fine. I
did choose the new graphical login and was GREATLY pleased to have the
choice of which window manager I wanted to use. Also they have added a
section to add a new (non-root) user at setup.

Some minor problems that showed up after shut down or reboot:

During the startup script I see the following;

        Checking root filesystem
        dev/hda1 was not cleanly unmounted, check forced.
        dev/hda1 : Deleted inode 41213 has zero dtime. FIXED.

and     Delaying eth0 initialization [FAILED]

There seems to always be a "core" dump file in my home directory after
restarting too. These things don't seem to affect the system while I am
working, but I would like to find out what's causing them and them fix
it if possible.

By the way my system is;

        Compaq PRESARIO 1681 Laptop
        96 meg ram
        3.2 gig hard drive

The Information Systems group at work could not get this laptop to work
with the new Novell client at work and were going to scrap it. I asked
for it to test Linux on and they handed it over. Now all I need is for
the Lotus Notes client to come out later this year and I can use this
for all of my work.

Anyway to answer you question. Yes you can upgrade, but if you don't
have any custom on your computer just do a new install. Either way IT
WILL WORK!
