Steve,

I had the same problem. I tried to use the modem with minicom from console
first, and it worked fine (not under X). When I used kppp it told me the
modem was busy. I eventually fixed the problem by configuring ppp dialing
from console using the ppp HOW-TO first. Then i went to X and kppp worked
fine as well.
I still don't know what exactly the problem was, but this might work for you
as well.
