I read so much about venus not working or being buggy.... just for the record
I've had no problems with it at all other than a cd I burned myself becoming
corrupted rather quickly - reburning the cd cured my install woes. It is
possible that this may be affecting other people similarly but seems very
highly unlikely. In case it does help someone though...my symptoms were:
Installing from cd (after booting from floppy) starts fine then dies
periodically, seemingly randomly, at differently parts of the installation. I
don't recall the error messages, but once or twice it was supposed to be an
inability to "write" to my hard drive - fact is, it actually couldn't READ
from my cd-rom (I guess it didn't know the difference as they're both ide
media). Otherwise had numerous problems getting it to run properly....
reburning the cd-rom from the huge 600 meg file I downloaded of mandrake 6.0
fixed all of the real problems - only stuff left is just linux's lack of user
friendliness regarding ports and the /dev folder (for a newbie this makes
absolutely no sense, especially when trying to mount or connect to a particular
port or filesystem and I type in exactly what various linux books tell me to
and I get error messages). However I'm quite in love with Venus. I used to
mess with slackware and kept trying out caldera (my work used to be affiliated
with them) but mandrake is the only one for me!
