Your question is pretty vague as I do not know what program or commands
u are using to connect to the net...
Creating an account on your box besides the root user is a good
idea...u should always use this account for all your day-to-day
things...and only su to root as and when u have to do things like
install programs or run certain programs that require root access.

You need to be a bit more specific before i can help u (hopefully)!
