You say you "have never used Linux or Unix before"... it's not like in
win95/98, where you can just fire up netscape and it'll set up a
connection for you.. you'll have to set up a connection first. 

Do you have the internet connection set up with the root account ok?????
(if not you've still a long way to go yet and should read the ISP how to,
modem howtos and ppp howto...these are all in /usr/doc/howto HINT: browse
this in netscape, it's a lot easier!)

If you do it's probably that the pppd command is only executible by root
or something like that...and if you're using kppp, then just read about
all the trouble everyone's been having with it on this list ..I'm sure
there's solutions.. I'd advise you to set up the ppp scripts and such by
hand, then you know what's going on ...and you'll also learn a lot more!
