No. You'll have to use a "boot" disk and a "rescue" disk
(or boot to single-user mode) and change it that way.

Try startx -- -bpp 16 or -- -bpp 24 or -- -bpp 32 (Please
note that space BEFORE the double-dashes and between the
bpp and the numbers!)
