This is what I did to get it mine to work.

A) Install LM9.0 to start the graphical user interface (i.e. X) at boot up. I
found that the sound card would not get configured to work unless this is the
case.
B) After boot up and before you login using the GUI, switch to another Virtual
Console using the Hot Keys Ctl-Alt-Fx, where Fx is any of function keys 1 to
6.
C) login as root and issue the command "sndconfig" without the quotes.
E) Select OK whenever it request an action from you.
F) It will auto-detect the ISA sound card. It will take a while to do that and
it will appear to have stopped. Wait until it comes back.
G) It will play a sample sound after it comes back.
H) tell it OK then logout.
I) Hot switch back to the Virtual Console 7. That is the one you were in
originally.
J) Login and you wilkl find that the sound card is working.
