I do have a Umax 1220U scanner, it worked with mdk8.2 (as a user, not root)but not on 9.0! I tried letting mandrake control center look for the scanner and I get the message:"Scanner Umax 1220U not supported bij this distribution", it would have been nice to have been warned about that. Could have left mdk8.2 where it quite happily was, and saved myself some time>:o( Does this have to do with the Redhat gcc version? I took Jan Wilsons tips and installed using the tarballs from mostang: quote.......... sane-backends-1.0.9-pre2.tar.gz and xsane-0.89.tar.gz You can locate these at: ftp://ftp.mostang.com/pub/sane/sane-1.0.9/ and ftp://ftp.mostang.com/pub/xsane/ respectively. For information: http://xsane.org/ unquote.............................. sane-backends-1.0.9.tar.gz isn't pre2 anymore though:o) Uninstall all rpm's connected to sane and be sure to install gtk1.2.0-devel (or higher) before. If you haven't installed any of the develepment options, at least install automake and if maybe gcc-c++ from the rpm's otherwise the tarballs wan't install. My Umax works fine now!:o) HTH, Harm
