I do it literally on any distro I work with - directly after the first
boot and before I fire up X. I make sure that I do that, I check the
bootup log with dmesg, make sure that all dependencies are happy, I make
sure that my inittabs are happy, my vid drivers installed (if I can find
them), sound is happy, modem is happy, network is happy - THEN I fire up
X (and whatever desktop I choose).

That way, any aberrations that come are a bit more easily tracked - but
hey, to each their own...that's just my way. I don't like to
"re-install" for some little minor mistake that I've made...

I just find it good practice to "do it right the first time"...if that
makes sense...
