The errors John brought up may well be valid, but as you say, it
'worked before'. Also, Windoze is more likely to have problems with
huge HDD's than Linux, and 20 gigs isn't even considered huge anymore.
More importantly, hardware causes must be eliminated before software
problems can be investigated. This is true for any problems.
Richard, while you're at it, after the drive is diagnosed, and
checks OK, run memtest86 on the system. Run the default tests, then if
no errors are found, enter memtest 'configuration' and turn off the L2
cache, repeat the test. If the system passes default tests, but errors
with the cache disabled, try reseating ram sticks or swapping them
around to different slots. Just so you'll know, the tests will take a
lot longer without the cache.
If all the above checks OK, then check your HDD cables, and you also
might try installing again with DMA disabled (nodma). You might want to
also try with the HDD set to PIO mode in bios (which also effectively
disables DMA). If you get this far, run 'bonnie++' tests of the HDD/fs.
Still got problems, get a new drive ;) You're always gonna suspect
that Fujitsu anyhow. Specially with all their bad press lately ;>
Check'n see, you might be able to RMA it, even if it's out of warranty.
