My maxtor 8.4gb drive acted the same way on the stock kernel. I had to append 
ide=nodma. I suspect it is the SIS5513 chipset on the motherboard, because I 
dont remember this happening with the old motherboard. After a re-compile 
things were much better. I believe the kernel option for firmware checks and 
dma keeps dma from being used on that drive.
