My latest experiments, based on John's comments that auto is almost as
good as supermount, has got it working now, apparently, but I don't have
an automatic mount and manual umount, as his post seem to suggest. I can
live without supermount, though it is undoubtedly convenient when it is
working.

Well let me just clarify that, I'm talking about the mounting and
unmounting from
desktop icon, merely leftmouse click the icon and it automatically
mounts the device
and displays the contents, to unmount merely rightmouse click down to
eject and it
automatically unmounts as well as ejects.

This sounds a good way - but how did you set it up? How do you get the lift-click-action and right-click-action? I presume it's user-mountable?

Simplicity itself, on desktop rightmouseclick to create new cdrom device,
upcomes CD/DVD-ROM Device, alter this to whatever you prefer,it's
just a name, I don't like long names , so cdrom, and cdrom2 is good
enough for me, do the permissions, everyone gets permission,
in device , dropdown list to point at the relevent device, eg. /dev/sd0
(/mnt/cdrom) and your done.
