The general consensus is that upgrading is not wise. The best way is to copy /home, /etc/samba and so on onto a spare partition if you have room, or cds if you don't, then so a clean install. You can then copy the config files back. If space is not a problem, you could do as I did, and, during the 9.0 setup you could mount your old home partition as /oldhome, which will make sure that you lose nothing from there, but don't forget the appropriate directories for samba and the other things you mention.
