it was not that then I wonder what I did that messed up mozilla messenger
for a while, and indeed will it happen again. There does not seem to be any
core file dump in home directory . Is there any history file somewhere that I could check.

I do not believe that mozilla logs its activity in a local file.

I experienced similar problems several times after hard restart, required because X window locked up. I could not start mozilla mailer. At least in one case I could not even start mozilla itself.

When I logged in as a different user, mozilla worked fine.

To solve this problem I started "mozilla -CreateProfile dummy", then after creating profile I quit and moved all mail folders and bookmarks from original directory to "dummy". Then I could delete the original profile.

You see, reiserfs does not protect fully against garbage written to files in case of a hard reboot, and some of this garbage probably ended up in mozilla data files, and mozilla probably could not resolve it.

I understand that lock-up did not occur in your case, but perhaps you may be able to apply my solution if it ever happens again.

OK then, I will do that next time.
Yes, I didn't have a lock up , but your suggestion about corrupt mozilla data files
makes sense.maybe in my case it was in some odd way time related and got
scrapped after the 2 hour time period when I finally rebooted to normality.
Thanks for your help Milos,

John
