I want to explore Star Office 6, but am finding it frustrating that some basic things are not yet set up. I know that I want to run spadmin as root to sort out fonts and printers, but can't find how to do that. I thought I had located the correct program (under /usr/lib/staroffice/program) but when I tried that I got the setup program, as though for a new install.
What am I doing wrong?
If Star Office still works the same way as OpenOffice, then you need something like /usr/local/bin/spadmin (type "which spadmin" to find the correct location for your system).
spadmin is one of the more annoying features of SO/OO. It would be much more convenient for it to use existing print and font utilities, but then one of the downsides of writing cross-platform applications is that you have to make them as self-contained as possible, hence all the redundancy and concommitant massive download size. In contrast, you have something like Lyx, which is a tiny program because it's largely a front-end to a load of stuff that is standard on Unix/Linux (LaTeX, ghostscript etc.), but trying to install it on Windows is a royal pain.
