While I have found LM8.1 a very friendly and capable OS, I have had a few problems caused by the USB interface and my digital camera.
I have not got the camera to work reliably and put this down to the state of development of the interface - an impression I have got from the newbie list. I am quite happy to live with this until it is rectified - especially as I'm unable to offer any programming assistance. [If desperate can always go to windoze to download]. Now to the point - I have had a number of instances where the camera has caused X to freeze. This is fine, but in two of these instances various applications have been 'castrated'/made unusable. By a process of trial and error with quite a deal of Mac experience in the background have been able to restore said applications. Thought that it might be a good thing to have a list of solutions to problems of this type. Here are my contributions - they may be well known to you all - hope I'm not teaching my grandmother...... 1. Opera 6.1 loses URL info and will not record new URLs in later sessions. Solution - go to .opera in /home/pingusa/ and rename .operaold. Your next start of the program will clear up addressing problems producing a new .opera file, but you will need to reestablish many of your entries in the preference menu. 2. Kppp on start says that it cannot find Kppp.pid and fails to initialize. Go to the Kppp.pid location specified in the dialogue and remove it. The program will then start again without problem. There must be other bits of such info which would be useful to us all. Hope you find this constructive. Rob
