Ya know Russ I had a very similar problem with my Logitech marble and couldn't
find a solution anywhere. I changed, and fiddled with, every mouse setting in
the Mandrake Control Center, the KDE Control Center, ran mousedrake to see if
I could find anything relevant there, checked the conf files, literally
*everything.* No joy. During the same time frame I installed release
candidate 2 of Mandrake 9. As with your mouse troubles, changing the settings
livened up the mouse temporarily but it never seemed to hold.

Then I cleaned the ball and the lens. Especially the lens. That fixed the
problem with the dragging cursor stumbling across the screen. The settings
for my Logitech are still set to generic and it doesn't seem to matter.

HTH
