I've went to edit my /etc/inittab file and it was already 5. Since last time I was here, I have downloaded quite a bit of stuff and most of it I had to get from the net. I couldn't get it off the CD, or find it in the packages that came with the distro. I did run that ldconfig and the CPU went into a bit of a spin and then it just returned to the command prompt. I don't necessarily want a graphic interface, I just want to get this system working so I can really start learning.I'm thinking about a total clean fresh install. I mean totally erase the entire partitions with the linux and start again. I may end up doing that if I'm not able to make any headway in the next 4 weeks.(I think I have patience) anyway, this OS will test that theory. I think I need to set up a path so that I can compile and execute the programs I want to use. How to do that is any one's guess. The sad truth of it is, that apart from the helpful hints from message boards like this one, I'm the only one that can make it work, which is a very daunting thought. Graham
