Don't let it be a daunting thought - at all. If *I* can do it, well,
literally, anyone can.

Ultimate path statements are in /etc/profile - and on a per user basis
they lie in /.bashrc

Library paths - the most important thing in compiling a program, lie in
the /etc/ld.so.conf file - so you're getting there...doing the ldconfig
only rebuilds the library path - so when it takes a long time, it's
doing alot of rebuilding...which is good.

Doing re-installations from fresh after learning something from a
particular installation only reinforces what you have learned, and gives
you the opportunity to make things more rock solid for the next go.

I end up doing a re-install of my "rock solid" OS install on my
"production" machine about every three months or so - because I want to
try something different, or I want to do something that I was told I
cannot do - but it always results in a stronger system, an increase in
personal knowledge, and fun overall - entertainment that nothing else or
no one else can give me - because it's an achievement in and of itself.

You'll do quite well.

Meanwhile, if your system is already set to runlevel 5 and you're
booting into runlevel 3 (text login) something seems a bit amiss...
