You have to create a symbolic link to your pda USB port with:
ln -s /dev/usb/tts/0 /dev/pilot
(this is my settings. Yours might be different).

In my case, before turning on the pda, if I do a "ls /dev/usb" there is
only a subdirectory named "hid" (the one used by my usb mouse).

After turning the pda on and doing again a "ls /dev/usb" I can see 2
subdirectories: hid and tts, this later one with 2 subdirectories: 0 and
1.
