I still would like to know just what could have caused this, if anyone has any

If i may guess... I've had that happen to me. The only thing I came up with was during the bootup Linux uses your RAM to store info as it boots. Perhaps something got fuxored in the RAM caches? Fwiw, I did a reboot & rescue some time ago and it worked fine afterwards too. Weird huh? Oh Yes, and it was an 8.2 install at the time.
