Um, Just wanted to jump in here, before everyone starts exchanging hugs
and kisses (I hate it when things get mushy!), but has anyone ever
considered using Samba instead of NFS?

Up until a few months ago, I was using both Samba ans NFS because of a
few dual-boot systems I had in my network. I didn't like the idea of
running 2 file-sharing systems on my network, so I had a look at the
latest LinNeighborhood to see if it had improved from a year or two ago.

Surprise of surprises, it not only worked pretty darned good, but it has
a neat little utility built-in that will write a "Mount Script". Once
that is written, you no longer need LinNeighborhood at all!

The mountscript becomes a desktop icon which can activated on demand. By
copying it to your users "desktop" folder, and modifying the permissions
of the icon, you can connect to your samba shares instantly. The shares
will remain connected for as long as you're logged in, and work
flawlessly!

My biggest problem with NFS was shutting down a client. NFS would
normally hang the shutdown procedure, and I would have to reset the
system, with the usual rebuilding of the JFS upon restart. Once I had
the mountscript nailed, I shutdown "autofs, nfs, portmap, and
netfslock", and everything's been 100% ever since.

Seems there is a happy compromise between GUI and C/L after all!

Now, I use only Samba on my server, which of course, lightens the load
on the server, and simplifies the setup of services as well. Oh, Yeah,
and no more lockups on the client-side either.

Of course, if you've already solved the problem, or resolved your
personal conflicts, please disregard this notice ! LOL!
