this could also be mandrake blanking screen. i have all bios settings to disable any timing and i get video blanking at cli.

Now I actually have this monitor's double, exactly the same make model etc on another computer,with M8.1, but with 1280x1024 , with 65thousand(16bits) on a riva vid card,and it is ok. so, I'm going to drop the coulour resolution down from 24 bits to 16 bits for a while and see whether it helps,
you still need to drop res. i would suggest 640 x 480, or whatever your lowest res is.
Anyway it didn't work I still had a powerdown.
Another interesting developement. I've been leaning how to use Gentoo boot disc, it comes with partimage as part of the programme, anyway, while using it I had a Thunggg. That is, a power off with a degauss, now this programme in case your unfamiliar is a CD boot disc that runs you to a boot]# prompt where you can call partimage up and do image file partition backups to spare partitions. Now the thing is the resolution is bare minimal , real low, zilch, just enough to do the job, with big thick chuncky lettering etc. So if it can happen in a very low resolution setup like this, out of xwindows, it has to be saying something loud and clear about the state of the monitor, I think.
while it is on my mind, do you have any type of volt ohm meter?
Well yes, not of your avo standard , only a cheapie little jobbie but it is ok for what it is. good enough to test voltages, and resistances, if I can remember how to. My school days were some time ago.
