Greetings all, I thought I would try changing my host/domain name to something cool.

I connect to net by dialup w/kppp, and I'm not on a local intranet.

I tried the shortcut method mentioned by Charles Edwards, which is the command su'd to
root:
"hostname -v [mandrake9.linuxpower]"(cool eh?)

Well that seemed to work till I rebooted, and then I was back with
"localhost.localdomain" again.

So I decided to use LinuxConf to change it more permanently. That worked, but the
first thing I noticed was that I could no longer access my winmodem. Well, no prob,
"urpme [modemdriver], then "urpmi [modemdriver] and run driver config script.....back
in business.

However, now I get a line in .xsession-errors that says:
"Can't get own hostname. Your system is severely
misconfigured." What does this mean?

"$hostname" in a terminal returns:
"mandrake9.linuxpower"

In /etc/sysconfig/network, the line "hostname=" line says, "mandrake9.linuxpower" but
the "domainname=" line says "localdomain". Is this correct?
/etc/hosts reads:
"127 . 0 . 0 . 1 localhost.localdomain, localhost"
Does this have to be changed?

Everything seems to be working OK, and I can find no unusual errors or warnings in
/var/log.
Does the line in .xsession-errors have any dire significance? Is my system "severely
misconfigured"? :-/

I think I need to learn something here ;-)
TIA for any feedback.
