Keith, your desription rings a bell : recently I got a brand new TFT screen, plugged it into my 9.0 box and it worked. Then, I got exited and bought a cheap graphics card (ATI Rage Pro). After that, your problem was mine, exactly. After fiddling around with numerous settings (each time requiring a re-install, because the screen went dead) I changed my x-server from 4.2 to the old 3.6 without graphics acceleration, and voila : everything worked. Although this is a wild guess, try changing your X-server.
