Are you trying to play "embedded" style mp3s from within someone elses
web page in a browser, or with a standalone player. In other words is the
mp3 on your HD, or is it opening a xmms http://somewhere.com/pls"; ?

I have little difficulty with the latter - if the link or if the mp3
is located somewhere on the HD, or if I can do xmms //path/to/site or
something, most oftentimes it works OK. Once in a while I get a "cannot
open audio". Usually when that happens, I try noatun or some other player.

Plenty exists to play mp3's: xmms mpg123 noatun kaboodle, even xine and
mplayer.

I've taken to saving playlists (like for radio stations) - that way I
can just turn the "radio" on via a command line rather than having the
need to go to the radiostation's wegsite & click on 'listen now".

Plugins IMHO are a different can of worms. For the longest time they never
could work in Linux -- because there seems to be a difference between
a plugin and just an external open of xmms or realplayer and so forth. On
Linux we have a shell, you see :). I remember emailing real.com a few
times on this issue years back.

I usually don't have issues playing "embeeded" at least for Realplayer,
they open in the little window (or open in separate player). For some
other stuff, such as quicktime, just having video/quicktime set to "mplayer"
doesn't seem to work. I'm not aware of sites needing plugin to work with
.mp3 specifically, save maybe for bbc.co.uk.
