I read Rob Enderle's article, and was a bit agro, but managed to write
him something that wasn't quite so agro - I tried very hard to let
intellect override my personal feelings, and believe it or not, I got a
response:

Actually I wasn't paid for this at all, however it wouldn't be unusual for
this to happen, one of the problems with a free product is it often doesn't
have the resources to defend against a direct attack and Microsoft really
wants this puppy to go away and they are incredibly well funded, somewhat
inept in their approach, but well funded. I actually haven't noticed that
trend, and many of the folks I work with have stopped writing on Linux
because of the hate mail when they aren't positive. Not a good sign.

Windows 95 was pilloried, and OS/2 was shot (I know because I was the
primary analyst doing the shooting, long story here). It may be a memory
thing but I was covering both and the breakage (and sloppy roll out) that
surrounded this platform (95) resulted in a massive press backlash that
most seem to have forgotten, including Microsoft.

Next month I'll do the Microsoft thing and piss off a whole new set of
folks. Best!

In the past six months, 99% of IT writers are all becoming "vehemently
biased" in the OSS/linux war.
It would appear, from an outsiders perspective, that people are being
paid to write with a particular slant in favour of Microsoft and against
OSS/linux.

The bitterness and "potty mouth" tactics arise from the fact that
OSS/linux are being slammed left and right everywhere you go.

Articles like "Linux Is Not Ready For the Enterprise (Opinion)" only go
to make it worse.

The "media" and FUD battle never occurred around OS/2 and Win95 - but
now it's growing in horrible proportions on a daily basis.

Could it be because OSS/linux doesn't have the capital to "media blitz"
or purchase writers opinions?

I've been steeped in computers for 25 years now. That's an awful long
time. I've seen "battles" come and go. I'm rather surprised that most
people's opinions sway towards a product and a company that can get away
with consistently putting out unfinished product, buggy product and
insecure product - and convince people that it's worth it, or convince
the public that it's what they want. It's the AOL marketing scheme all
over again.

When you blatantly blast a sector of the public, it comes back to haunt
you, and ill feelings come with it as well.

I'm so sorry to see otherwise intelligent tech writers turning into FUD
tools.
