That's exactly the point I wanted to make.

If *I* were writing for profit, by all means, there is nothing that
would be sacred - even if I held it personally revere - the idea would
be to write to sell myself. If I wrote something completely outlandish
and foolish, yet sold the story or article, then my job has been done.

If, for whatever reason, I pissed off half the world in writing
something, by all means, popularity is popularity - it wouldn't matter
if it was good popularity or bad popularity - people would read it no
matter what.
