Hit Ctl + Alt +F1 and you will get a text screen. You can log in as user 
there.

Then
useradd -p password user_name
to add a new user.
Ctl+Alt+F7 takes you back to the login screen but I expect you need to reboot 
before seeing the new user.

To enable login as root in the future
MandrakeControlCentre>Hardware>DisplayManagerChooser>KDM
