This is very important. It is *nice* that there is a workaround
with Konq or Opera, but it is not the answer. These institutions
must be told in very clear terms that it is a violation of a
customer's right to choose their own software when they require IE.
There is no technical reason to require it (well, shit, quite the
opposite really), any of the browsers available out there are
capable of the necessary encryption levels.

Use whatever works. It goes against the grain to pretend to use IE, but if that's what it takes, use it.

After that, I agree that you should complain to the bank. Some do listen, even if they don't always seem to. Recently I discovered a serious flaw in the design of HSBC's on-line banking, when used with Mozilla. I spoke to the Mozilla programmers, who helped me identify the problem, then alerted the bank. They started with the stock 'We don't support Linux, or Mozilla', but went on to say that they had passed my comments to their programmers, for consideration in the next update. I really expected that to be the end of the matter, but last week, around a month after I told them about it, the fault had disappeared. They obviously had tackled the problem.
