old_linux - yes, it's the old boot. It's really for people who install a new kernel. As you all know, you don't "upgrade" kernels by upgrading them, you do it by adding a new kernel (if you have any sense). That way, if things don't work out as planned, you still have a kernel too boot from, and that is "linux_old". If used this trick in reverse when the kernel that came with a new distro didn't play nice with my hardware - I upgraded, then booted from the old kernel. And of course it is vital for those intrepid souls who want to install development kernels.
