Sounds like it's changing host names when it dials up. If you make these
changes (host names, etc.) while in kde (using the command line or a gui
tool) and then commit the changes you need to restart kde or it will do just 
what you've described.

As for a fix, I don't know, look through linuxconf and kppp and make sure all
is well. Changes in linuxconf should not effect kppp as it's a stand alone app.
