Philip:

Without knowing more about your modem, it is very difficult to answer
your
question. It does sound, though, as if you may have a winmodem -- and
that
is
not a good thing. However, workarounds do exist. Take a look at these
sites:
http://linmodems.org
http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html
(Also, if you haven't already done so, be sure to visit the site cited
by
Anne:
http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org.)

Keep us posted.

By the way, you'll be way ahead of the game if you include a brief
description
of your hardware in future posts. Answering questions about sound cards
and
modems is all but impossible without knowing the specific items
involved.

no its not a winmodem
its a cable modem a motorola sb4100
its is connected in windows
but i did have to do it manually or a friend did
he said it was to do with the mother board not detecting the settins in
auto
mode.
i think i will have to do the same in linux but i have no idea how.
my mother board is a asrock with a 10/100 lan and onboard sound
it has a sis chipset.
i did try to let the wizard in mandrake controll have a go but it
wouldnt
give me an ip address.
