First of all, thank you for your help.

I realized that either the "drakes" had disppeared off my system or else
they were no longer in my Path.

I would be happy to reinstall the missing bits if you could please tell me
how.

OK Eric, this *should* work as long as you have the software installer (gurpmi) installed - if you find you have no software installer you'd probably be better off doing a complete reinstall as heaven knows what might also be missing!

Open a root terminal and type "konqueror" (without the quotes). This should open the Konqueror file manager with root privileges.

Put the first Mandrake CD in whatever CD device you have.

In Konqueror, navigate to the CD device (probably /mnt/cdrom) and then navigate through the folders until you find one full of rpm's.

Go through the list of rpm's until you find ones with "drake" or "drak" in the name.

Right click on one of these rpm's, find the software installer on the menu (it might be on a submenu - sorry, I don't remember!) and follow the instructions to install (select "install", not "save"). If it says it wants to install other rpm's at the same time (dependencies), agree.

Once you have installed everything useful-looking from the first CD, repeat with all the other Mandrake CDs.

Go back to your root terminal and type "mcc" (again, no quotes) and the Mandrake Control Centre should come up.

Get back to me once you get this far!

Margot
