Guys,
What do you think of this:
"Because you run Mandrake, you didn't invest the 20-30 minutes that most Shorewall users do in learning about Shorewall during the installation process."
That is a response I got in the shorewall list. I hate it. In fact, I have been getting those kind of views from many people in the Linux community when they found out that I use Mandrake.
What's wrong with Mandrake? Does Linux have to be difficult so that we are proud to be called "Linux guru" by others? Does the easiness that offered by Mandrake make it's users lazy and stupid? I'm afraid this is the unpleasant stigma that we get in the Linux community.
Boy, I hate this.
When I hear stuff like that, I usually tell them they are misinformed..
some of the following are why mandrake is an excellent distro. (mostly server stuff.)
- Postfix instead of sendmail.
- Postfix ready to run chroot out of the box.
- urpmi is almost as good as apt-get (when the mirros are in alignment.)
- contribs contains ready to go packages for all manner of useful server stuff like amavis-new and perl modules.
- advx apache is a fast, stable web server with all the addins already available.
- inbuilt dif checks and other security tools.
Thats just some.. I could go on.. in short its just guys that are clinging to the linux geek elitism...
They group mandrake together with the likes of Lindows and Xandros.. when it really should be grouped
next to redhat/fedora...
On the Shorewall front though, they are probably correct.. Mandrakes firewall setup is not what i consider optimum..
I tried shorewall on mandrake once, then swapped to either custom iptables scripts or gShield and have not looked back.
Yes mandrake have made shorewall easier to configure.. but they did it at the cost of people "learning" the specifics of its layout.
I think mandrake would be better off with something like firestarter for the newb's and then shorewall for the more advanced users.
most newbies are already used to the likes of zonealarm, so firestarter would not be a big leap for them.
just my $0.02
