 Are you sure you screwed something up or did kdeinit just crash?

Try restarting the X-Server while you're in the log-in manager screen.

Just for fun open a terminal when you're already in KDE and become super user 
then type

kdeinit

and strike the Enter key. Then try to open a directory. For some reason the 
xserver seems to get confused sometimes, probably when your IP# changes. 
Depends on what your hostname is set to or where it comes from but I thought 
that only affected Gnome.

As for the character limit, what application? Or do you mean everywhere? I 
don't do Ximian. Sorry.

If none of that helps scream for help and someone that knows what they're on 
about may take a swing at it. (-:
