I think that's normal... I could be wrong but I think it's just tossing
most of your unused memory into a cache. Run ktop and click on the
"Performance Meter" tab. See where it says "Cache (kB)" ? That will
probably show a large amount of RAM put into your cache, and if you open a
program that needs to use some of that RAM, the size of the cache will
shrink accordingly.
I have 48MB as well, though, so I feel obligated to mention that though
KDE ran adequately for me, it DOES use more RAM than most other window
managers (except Gnome, which is just as bad). I get much better
performance from XFCE and Window Maker which are also simple, graphically
configurable, and easy to get comfortable with IMO.
