I thought I made it executable SUID but rdate only worked as root.  I'll
seek further advice on that problem.  As for the hardware clock, I got a
message: bash: alias: 'hwclock --systohc' not found.  I added your words
and quotes exactly to the alias for rdate but as a separate phrase;  was
that correct?
Anyway, a great leap forward even if it is not automatic and accompanied
by a Big Ben chime. Thanks to you both.
