I doubt if the two problems are related since vfat is the Windblow$ file system and
linux uses the ext2 filesystem. The first problem is easy to fix. Recompile your
kernel to include vfat support. The second problem, I'm not really sure what is
causing the problem. Sounds like you may be misssing some KDE libs. Try booting into
Gnome if yopu installed that also and see if the problem continues with the gnome
apps.
