Hi I installed Mandrake 7.0 last night, and I have been unable to get my
internet connection going. I DLed the i386iso and burnt the CD, no
problems... the install went very smoothly, and I get no errors.

I am running two NICs ( a 3Com 509b and an SMC1211TX) Linux shows both of
these as what they are, but the drivers in the Network config don't seem to
match up well as far as numbers go..it looks like it's trying to use realtek
drivers (rt139?) on one of the cards... which is the one I'm sure works : )

I can ping my LAN with no problems with eth0, and have tried switching the
cables around so I use the same NIC for the Cable Modem but have had no
luck... I've tried using the DHCP ...no go..., and manually setting
everything with the info from winipcfg ... again , no luck.

I think there is a deeper problem than the actual settings there because my
Modems "PC light" never comes on in Linux. (Motorola CyberSURFER Wave
Modem). I have spent the last 6-7 hours combing the various help sites and
the newbie archives with no real results. I have called RoadRunner as well
but they do not support Linux at all. The tech I spoke to said as long as I
get a TCP/IP pulse going into the modem the light should come on...

Everything does work fine in Windows (98) btw.

And while I'm on this subject, is there nay way to tell what NIC is actually
eth0 and which eth1 without physically moving the cables to see which works?

any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

thanks,
Mark
