[newbie] Gimp v Paint Shop Pro

Could anyone tell me if Gimp is an equal to Paint Shop Pro or Photo Shop
for Windows.
I design wed sites and use PSP and PS for all of my graphics, however
as I become more impressed with my MD6-1 installation I wish to move away
from Windows and stick with Linux (especially since I have downloaded the
bluefish HTML editor.........in a word excellent !!!!!) 
Any suggestions for Linux compatable printers would be great also.
