Actually, what I did was simpler. I remembered that after a format the system has sound, but as it locks in the install if I try to set up the network I skip that part. So I then boot to linux, and have sound. I then set up the network and no sound.. My solution was simple - take the eth0 out the boot process and put the command 'ifup eth0' in rc.local(?).
