Ah, those things gave me hell too until I finally installed with every single
flipping libary and source code on the Mandrake disk. But for your
problems....

After you get the ./configure error, write down what file it's missing. Then
go to rpmfind: http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/ and do a search on that file.
You can then download the program. Also try to get the "development" version of
that file if there is one, as somethings need the development version (like
compiling plugins for XMMS require the XMMS-development libraries, and not just
plain XMMS).
