When I tried your command './configure 2>
filename.txt' I got this:

configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH

otherwise here is what I get when I try to install any
tared program.

loading cache ./config.cache

checking target system type...i586-pc-linux-gnuoldld
checking build system type...i586-pc-linux-gnuoldld

checking for a cc... no
checking for a xlc... no
configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH
